The Heels were certainly not the same in the ACC Tournament without him.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day D.C. Basketball

D.C. basketball history would be nothing without the Irish. The neighborhood around Turkey Thicket playground gave us talented players such as Stan Kernan of McKinley Tech, Jack Sullivan of Saint Anthony’s and “Monk” Malloy of Archbishop Carroll. One of DeMatha’s first high school All-Americans was Brendan McCarthy. Joe Gallagher was a legendary coach at St. John’s. Mike O’Brien, Jim O’Brien- we’ve had some great Irish players.

And what about The Fighting Irish? Take away the careers of Austin Carr, Bob Whitmore, Sid Catlett, Collis Jones, ‘Duck’ Williams, Adrian Dantley, Tom Sluby, Cecil Rucker, and Monty Williams, and what is basketball at Notre Dame. Guess where “Red” Auerbach lived when he coached and later was general maganer and president of that most Irish of all teams- the Boston Celtics? Why, Washington of course- Auerbach’s first two coaching gigs were here at St. Albans, and Roosevelt High School.
