DC Basketball Legend Wil Jones Dies

Longtime local high school and college coach, and former American University All-American Wil Jones died. Coach Wil Jones had deep connections to every local basketball figure from Elgin Baylor and Lefty Driesell, to Earl Jones. His status and mark on the national game cannot be understated.

I remember Willy Jones as the coach of those great Robinson Rams teams in the 70’s. He took them to the Regional Finals only to lose in the championship game to Bucky Roman and the Lee Lancers.

  2. I meet Wil Jones on my way to the American University basketball camp in the Poconos mountains in 1971. I remember he had the coaching shorts in every color( i.e.very sporty).and he talked more trash than anyone i had every meet.Coach could see i was hunger as a soph. in high school to learn the game and he allowed me to play with the college players every night. That helped me build my confidence,Wil was one of Washington DC’s Great Basketball Stories. He touched ballplayers from the 1940’s to the present.I loved this guys style,DC swagger started with Wil Jones! Rest in Peace, MY MAN!
