After a lengthy and trying push on behalf of his descendants and a small cadre of historians and scholars, former schools physical education administrator Dr. Edwin B. Henderson was voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
This is long overdue, as it was Dr. Henderson’s interest in our childrens’ education, and early organization of athletic leagues and officials that laid the seed for the fruition of players such as Lenny Ford, Earl Lloyd, Elgin Baylor, Hillary Brown, Willie Wood, Dave Bing, Ollie Johnson, Leapin’ Lou West, and Lamar McCoy. Dr. E.B. Henderson laid the groundwork for Washington’s status as a basketball hotbed, and more importantly, served as a mentor to professionals such as Dr. Charles Drew. Congratulations to his family.
