Landon’s Fred Hetzel Named to Southern Conference Hall of Fame

Fred Hetzel grew up in Washington’s Chevy Chase neighborood, attended Alice Deal JHS and The Landon School, and helped put the Davidson College basketball program on the national map (think “Lefty” Driesell). He has been named to the Southern Conference Hall of Fame:

Hetzel was the first player chosen in the 1965 NBA Draft (before Rick Barry or Bill Bradley). Being named a Hall of Famer in a conference that featured Frank Selvy, “Hot” Rod Hundley, Jerry West, Bob Tallent, Sam Huff, Dick Snyder, Sam Wyche, Bobby Ross, Beth Daniel, Rod Thorn, Betsy King, Bosh Pritchard, Brad Faxon, Mike Malloy and Wil Robinson is no mean feat.
