Bob Ryan said it of the Spingarn alum:
I agree that ElginBaylor started the Washington DC scene in regards to basketball, but Washington had a team called the Washington DC Bears that won the 1943 Chicago Herald American World Professional Basketbal Tournament. They played their games on Sunday afternoons at Turner Areana (the Washington Coliseum) before sold out crowds. The people on U. Street used to talk about the Bears all of the time during this era. Some members of the team had played for the New York Rens. This was 15 years before Elgin (and I think Elgin Baylor is one of the greatest players ever to play the game).
You are right Mr. Harris.
