Sam Young And the Panthers

They dumped DePaul 98-79 in the Big East Tournament. Friendly High’s Sam Young scored 19 with five rebounds and a couple steals, and made three of his four three-point attempts.



Around the NBA

It was Cleveland 103 Indiana 95. The trade engineered by DeMatha great Danny Ferry has brought life to the club. Eleanor Roosevelt’s Delonte West scored 14 to go with his four rebounds, six assists, three steals, and a blocked shot. D-West is seeing a lot more minutes than he was in Seattle. Charlotte downed Washington 100-97, but Roger Mason of Good Counsel scored 15 in 28 minutes for the losers. Portland upended New York 120-113, aided by Jarrett Jack’s 13 points in 26 minutes. JJ’s from Fort Washington here in Prince George’s County. Kevin Durant netted 20 in Seattle’s 114-106 loss to Toronto. Durant’s a Prince George’s County boy.


Hoyas High

Georgetown won its second consecutive Big East title, guided by Gonzaga grad John Thompson III. For the Hoyas, frosh Austin Freeman of DeMatha scored 15 points on six-for-nine shooting, including a 3 of 4 night from three-point range. Georgetown Prep (Rockville) product Roy Hibbert added 12 points, four blocked shots, and a half-dozen boards. It was the first time the Hoyas had copped the conference back-to-back.

Springbrook’s Folarin Campbell led a 63-52 George Mason grudge win over Northeastern by popping in his usual 20 points. The victory placed them in the CAA semifinals. North Carolina topped rival Duke 76-68, Clinton, Md.’s Ty Lawson had three steals, three assists, and 10 points in the effort. Locals Marcus Ginyard (Bishop O’Connell-UNC) and Nolan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md.-Duke) also played in the contest.
