In the North Carolina men’s 91-69 shellacking of Boston College, Marcus Guinyard of Bishop O’Connell (Alexandria, Va.) contributed three steals and 10 points in 25 minutes, and Ty Lawson from Clinton, Md. (Prince George’s County) shot 4-6, and eight of nine from the free throw line for 16 points to accompany his 10 assists and three steals.
Elsewhere, the Maryland women routed Miami (Fl.) 90-50, a game in which St. John’s (D.C.) Marissa Coleman scored 12, had two blocks, and two steals in 29 minutes of play.
In the NBA, the Sonics stopped the Cavs 101-95, behind 10 of 16 shooting for 24 points, and four assists, two steals, and two rejections by young Kevin Durant of Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.). His homeboy Jeff Green made all eight of his shots, for 17 points in the effort. Green’s from Northwestern High, which produced Harold Fox, Larry Spriggs and Lenny Bias. A third Prince George’s County product who logged significant time for the winners was Delonte West (of Greenbelt, Md’s Eleanor Roosevelt High).
Reston’s Grant Hill had three steals and five boards to go with 10 points in 24 minutes and change as the Suns dropped one to the Spurs, 84-81. Good to see Grant healthy after all these years- and with a contending squad to boot.
